The Scroll for de plannenmannen
Final Scroll
My “Bossmen” for my internship use a giant scroll of paper to brainstorm and work with clients. Their challenge for me was to design and 3D model an attachment to constrain the scroll’s movement for travel and use. My creation is a simplified wooden framework prioritizing the Aesthetics of interaction: locking, unlocking, opening, closing and scrolling back and forth.
This was my first solo project as an educated designer, challenging my design practices and approaches. In the process of interviewing my “clients” and iterating through various prototypes: sketches, cardboard, 3D models and a fill wooden assembly I became aware of my creative weaknesses and technical strengths. I found difficulty being flexible and alternating between high and low fidelity, learning to push through and allow myself to “mess around” in a professional setting. Being encouraged to make full and functioning prototypes allowed me to fully explore the interaction and iterate well-thought-out, intuitive mechanics.
Skills I personally gained from this project include:
3D modeling
Sketching
Woodworking
Rapid Prototyping
3D Model Iterations
