I find Business and Entrepeneurship to be an area of struggle as an academic designer. The expertise area consists of situationally-aware skills such as market analysis, opportunity spotting and audience pitching. They describe some of the initial reasoning behind the purpose and function of a design and, in my eyes, set narrowing criteria for design projects. In many design projects, money and support are key contributors to success that can be secured through focusing on unsaturated markets and catering to their community...

I organized a fundraiser event during my IB studies where students donated art, which I sold at an auction dinner/ music performance to raise money for cat TNR in our town.

Unlike many students attempting similar projects around me, my buisness plan was successful in profit, enjoyment of participants and collaboration with existing systems. By starting with a goal to raise money for a local nonprofit, I situated myself and my audience locally: families in my school and town. Knowing my audience allowed me to consider what worked best for them. Many students in my area liked to create art and perform, while adults in the area enjoyed well-organized food and music events to connect. My design evolved around the needs and functions of the already-existing people in my community, making use of opportunity. Meanwhile, my experience in event management through my music teacher and team management through StuCo, Debate, MUN etc gave me the skill necessary to develop a quality event that met the expectations set within the community. As I look toward a career in design, it is fundamental that I be able to adapt my work to the requirements of the environment it is in. While I spent my last academic year learning several marketting and business basics through the IE curriculum, I have not since integrated them strongly into my design process. Thus, I look to integrate market analysis and opportunity spotting inentionally when framing upcoming design projects.

The outcome: A successful auction, great turnout and live music
