Design Research Probe Kit
Probe Kit
As opposed to typical user research methods such as interviews, questionnaires and observations, this project explored the effects of “probe kits” as methods of exploring and understanding a user group. Doenja Oogjes’ “Designing for another home” introduced the technique of designing activities and transformative objects and presenting them as gifts to a research group to preserve a more intimate connection and give agency to participants. Research consistently reveals that lasting, personal relationships with study participants creates a greater sense of trust and yields a stronger outcome, which is why I make an effort to apply probe kit-like methods in my project research.
Investigating the phenomenon of “Dutch student housing” and the relationships and sense of connectivity between housemates, my group and I developed a multifaceted probe kit including drawing, writing, photography, scavenger hunt activities and a pinboard calendar. The results helped us identify how housemates feel about each other and the areas within their home as well as their personalities. This laid a groundwork to design a physical technology in the home to aid their communication, attend to their needs and alleviate tension.
I mainly developed skills of User Research while developing my graphical communication skills and design logic to ensure a comprehensive outcome.
